Ventura Productions, LLC, has operated the rodeo and concert venue through a 15-year lease with the city, which owns the arena. The city and Ventura Productions share any revenue raised from events held at the facility. This fiscal year, the company is paying Pico Rivera $122,567 for the lease, the amount of which increases by 5 percent each year. The company’s contract is set to expire in May 2007. Ventura Productions has told officials it is interested in renewing its operating contract for the facility. But city officials said they might put the contract out for bid to see whether the city could get a better deal. “The City Council is anxious to see what’s out there. They want to hear from other companies who might be interested in operating the arena to see how they might do that and how it would benefit the city,” said Bob Spencer, Pico Rivera’s spokesman. The owners of Ventura Productions, the Hauser family, did not return several phone calls Tuesday seeking commment. The city, meanwhile, has hired a construction company, MZN Construction Inc. of La Habra, to perform inspections of the aging arena, which first opened in 1978. In January, the company identified 82 mostly minor items that need to be corrected. “It was little things like adding toilets to handle a certain load to cracks in concrete that could just be signs of age or something more,” said Michael Moore, the city’s director of public works. MZN now is scheduled to complete a second, more in-depth inspection of the arena, at a cost of $47,000 to the city. Officials said they hope to create a list of upgrades for the 6,000-seat arena. Those improvements could be included in any new future lease agreement, Spencer said. Councilman Gregory Sal- cido said the relationship between Ventura Productions and the city has been mutually productive. “There is a good working relationship, but we must be diligent in exploring all options available,” he said.
