Province Ready to Repair Lighthouse Beach

first_imgThe province is ready to hire contractors to repair Lighthouse Beach in Pictou County, as soon as federal approval for the project is received. The beach is vulnerable to winter storms and has been washed out numerous times. The Department of Transportation and Public Works has attempted repairs of this stretch of Crown land to prevent further erosion. The repair job is more urgent now because testing done by the Department of Environment and Labour has shown unacceptable levels of fecal streptococcus in the water in Moodie Cove. Federal approval is necessary for the repair work to begin. The source of the contamination is thought to be a sewage treatment plant within the federal jurisdiction of the Pictou Landing First Nation community. The contaminated water is flowing through the washed-out section of the beach and into Moodie Cove. Repairing the beach is expected to solve the contamination problem in the cove. Transportation and Public Works plans to implement a long-lasting solution when it repairs the beach. Large rocks will fill the washed-out area and be covered with sand. In the spring, grasses will be transplanted on the dune side of the repaired beach.last_img read more
