Bucksport girls’ soccer tops Central in playoff game

first_imgBUCKSPORT — Whenever the Bucksport girls’ soccer team came up clutch Wednesday, most of the celebrating didn’t come from fans yelling and cheering — it came from car horns.Temperatures were below 40 degrees throughout the afternoon and early evening, and many fans chose to watch from the comfort of the warmer air and heated seats in their vehicles instead of the cold. With the way their Golden Bucks played, everyone in a line of cars that ranged from large pickup trucks to small sedans had a lot to honk about from the field-side parking lot, too.Bucksport defeated the Central Red Devils 3-1 on Wednesday to advance to the Class C North semifinals. It was the fourth straight win for the Golden Bucks and also the fourth game in a row in which the team scored at least three goals.“It’s hard for me to be happier with how this team is playing right now,” Bucksport head coach Mike Garcelon said. “In the quarterfinals, it’s the cream of the crop, and we showed a lot today.”This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textThe game started off slowly for both teams, with neither having much of an advantage over the first 30 minutes. That changed with 8 minutes, 24 seconds to play in the first half when a well-placed cross landed in front of Hannah Ashmore, who slotted it past the goalkeeper to give Bucksport (10-4-1) the first half’s only goal.Bucksport had three separate scoring opportunities fly just wide of the net at the start of the second half, but its offensive pressure paid off when Ashmore sent the parking lot into a frenzy by adding her second goal with 23:13 left to play.“I knew I’d have to find crosses and capitalize on opportunities because they can play tight defensively,” Ashmore said. “A lot it was just being there at the right time.”Garcelon had hoped for a solid showing from Ashmore. As has been the case against other teams throughout the season, he knew Central (8-5-2) would use multiple defenders in an attempt to take the team’s star forward, Tina Hjelle, out of the picture. Even with Ashmore coming off a knee injury she suffered a few weeks ago, Garcelon was confident in her.“We’ve been harping on her for three days and saying, ‘Listen, you have to score a goal because they’re going to double up on Tina,’” he said. “She struggled a little bit over the first week or two when she came back, but she’s been playing better and better. She came up huge today.”Despite being double-teamed, Hjelle brought out the car horns once again when she added a goal of her own with just over 11 minutes to play. Central scored on a penalty kick with 15 seconds left, but it was too little, too late for the Red Devils.Bucksport will play its semifinal game on the road against the Orono Red Riots (11-1-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. The Red Riots have beaten the Golden Bucks in their two previous meetings this year, but both games were decided by one goal.“We just have to play tough and do everything we did today,” Ashmore said. “They’re good, but we can beat them.” Ellsworth runners compete in virtual Boston Marathon – September 16, 2020 Hospice volunteers help families navigate grief and find hope – September 12, 2020 Latest Posts Latest posts by Mike Mandell (see all)center_img Bio Mike MandellMike Mandell is the sports editor at The Ellsworth American and Mount Desert Islander.
