Danny Murphy’s rant to Everton fans: ‘Have patience with Martinez and young stars!’

first_imgDanny Murphy has urged Everton fans to be patient with under-fire manager Roberto Martinez and his youthful stars, insisting the Toffees ‘are close to being a very good side.’Everton have dazzled with their attacking play at times this season – no Premier League team outside the current top three have scored as many goals – but their leaky defence has cost them points as they sit disappointingly in 11th place. The Merseysiders have the most draws in the top flight and have also lost the most points from winning positions this season, frustrating fans with their inconsistent form. Many supporters believe Martinez’s job is hanging by a thread and some have already called for the axe to fall, despite the Spaniard having led the club to their highest ever Premier League points tally in 2013-14.But ex-Liverpool midfielder Murphy has been impressed by his former rivals, and believes fans need to cut the team, and especially young trio Ross Barkley, John Stones and Romelu Lukaku, some slack as they continue to learn their trade.Speaking on the Colin Murray show, Murphy said: “Everton’s three best players – Barkley, Stones and Lukaku – are all still under the age of 23. They are hugely talented young players still learning their game.“Why shouldn’t they be allowed to make mistakes and have some bad performances?“Stones has been criticised recently but he’s going to make mistakes as a centre-half, Barkley is going to give the ball away sometimes which is going to lead to goals for the opposition, and Lukaku is going to have the odd bad game, but he hasn’t had many of those.“It’s only Martinez’s third season, do the Evertonians not…patience! Patience!“Moyes was manager for eight or nine years, did a great job but didn’t win a trophy. Martinez has moved them forward in a short space of time, not just in terms of their points tally last season but in the way they now play football.“This year, they’re still in the FA Cup and if they actually do go on a good run, which they’re more than capable of, they could finish sixth or seventh which is not a bad season.”Everton halted a run of five league games without a win by beating relegation contenders Newcastle 3-0 at home on Wednesday, with Barkley scoring twice. On the side’s form, Murphy added: “I enjoy watching Everton play, and I think they’re close to being a very good side.“They have played some absolutely scintillating football this season and yes, it’s been frustrating that they’ve defended poorly at times.“But it’s very hard to find that balance where you have good attacking players going forward, scoring goals and pleasing the fans, but also keep clean sheets at the same time.” Everton starlet Ross Barkley celebrates 1last_img read more
