Argonauts Come Close, but Fall in Double Header Opener

first_img April 6, 2007Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – Robin Williams laced a pair of RBI doubles to help lift fifth-ranked Valdosta State to a 3-2 win over West Florida on Friday. Valdosta State (32-3, 11-0 GSC) won their 18th straight, while West Florida (23-19, 3-6 GSC) dropped to 5-10 this season in one-run games.Valdosta State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning against West Florida starter Taren Walton (Pensacola, Fla./Daytona Beach CC). With a runner at second base and two out, Alexandra Acosta doubled down the third base line to drive in the first run. Williams followed with a double to left center that scored Acosta and gave Valdosta State a 2-0 lead.West Florida cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning on Nicky VanCamp’s team-high fifth home run of the season. It was VanCamp’s second home run off of the Lady Blazers Kristen Lindsey this season.Williams helped Valdosta State add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Williams delivered an RBI double to right field to regain Valdosta State’s two-run advantage.West Florida cut the lead to one with a single run in the top of the sixth inning. After Ashlee Simpson (Decatur, Ala./Jefferson State CC) led off with a walk, she advanced to second on Whitney Gay’s (Cantonment, Fla./Tate HS) foul out to left field. Simpson came around to score on Walton’s one out, RBI double. But Lindsey settled down and retired the final five Argonaut hitters to seal the win.Lindsey (14-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Walton (11-7) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
