Slow down

Others are having problems with the 20 seconds allowed for pedestrians to cross five lanes. Other senior citizens have complained to the city about the intersection and the inability to cross it during the light. And schoolchildren often have to run to get across the street before the light turns. Police responded in a myopic way, only seeing the world through a cop’s eyes: We are just trying to protect pedestrians from getting creamed on the roadway. Surely, it would be better – and more economical, too – to adjust the light a few seconds instead of sending out cops to bust kids and old folks. The city ought to move fast on this intersection before anyone gets hurt – or cited again. Slowing down for a few seconds more is a small price to pay for the safety of pedestrians. It’s true that we live in a rush-rush world, where the hare’s frantic speed is prized over the turtle’s plodding slowness. But when cops are spending their time hustling old women across the street to save motorists a few seconds – and hitting the old ladies with a ticket if they lag – things have reached an absurd extreme. That’s what happened to Mayvis Coyle, an 82-year-old woman who got cited by a police officer for crossing a Sunland stretch of treacherous Foothill Boulevard at Woodward Avenue in February. The slow-walking woman didn’t reach the other side before the light turned red, and a Los Angeles police officer cited her. Instead of feeling ashamed and writing a check for $114 to the city, Coyle got mad. Now she’s fighting both to get her ticket quashed and for the city to do something about what many say is a short crosswalk light that doesn’t allow pedestrians enough time to get safely across. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
